on having a good partner

by Akshat Kushwaha · updated

after a day that has taken more than it gave, a good relationship can be surprisingly ordinary: a call, a stupid meme, a message asking whether you ate.

the important part is not that another person fixes your mood. nobody can carry that job forever. it is that you do not have to edit yourself into someone easier to love before you can be close to them.

trust looks less cinematic than people make it sound. it is being able to say, “i'm not doing great,” without turning it into a case for why you are still worth keeping around. it is disagreeing without making the relationship feel threatened. it is knowing both people are allowed to have a difficult day.

love does not remove the hard parts of life. it gives you one person with whom the hard parts can be named honestly.

that is not dependence in the helpless sense. it is partnership. two people still responsible for their own lives, still choosing to make room for each other inside them.

if you find that, take care of it. not through grand declarations every day, but through attention. listen properly. apologise without making it a performance. ask the small questions.

home, i think, is often just the person beside whom you can stop bracing for a minute.
